Chapter Nineteen

In the morning, Jasper and I were chasing a possible killer for a possible murder and everything about the case was starting to feel like a flimsy goose chase. Now, we were hot on the trail of what Jasper and I had named the Valentine's Day killer. So far as we knew, the second victim was still alive, but that didn't make our suspect any less dangerous.

"You thinking the same thing as me?" Jasper said grimly.

"That there might be more boxes of poisoned chocolates sitting in women's mailboxes? I sure am. Let's hope we can zero in on a killer before there are any more victims. I only wish I'd been able to stick that box of chocolates in my purse before the police officer chased me out of there."

"Probably better you didn't. That might have turned you into a suspect. Besides, if our killer is using a powerful poison, like cyanide, then you wouldn't want that stuff floating around in your purse. I've heard it can make you sick just by touching it."

"Good point, Jasper."

He nodded his head side to side. "Occasionally I come up with a gold nugget. I think that candy shop is just around the next corner."

Our next step was obvious. We needed to go where our killer was buying the chocolates. With any luck, the shopkeeper or store clerk would remember who'd bought the small heart-shaped red boxes filled with milk chocolates.

Jasper parked outside the Sweets for Sweetie Candy Shop. A peppermint striped awning shaded a large front window that was filled with trays and glass bowls of colorful candy. Bags of cotton candy hung like pink clouds on a wire stretched across the window. I could smell the sugar and chocolate before we even stepped inside the shop.

A young woman, who didn't look older than twenty, was wearing a candy-striped apron that matched the store awning as she scooped malted milk balls into a pink paper bag. The little boy on the other side danced around his mother's feet as he waited anxiously for his bag of treats.

The candy clerk's face popped up from her task. She had dark eyes. Her thick brown hair was pinned up by dozens of glittery hair clips. "I'll be right with you," she said before returning the scoop to the large glass jar of malt balls.

"Hmm," Jasper said. "Those malt balls are giving me a craving for one of Duffy's double chocolate malteds. I'll have to stop in and get one when we get back to the office."

I only half heard his future plans for a double chocolate malt. My attention had been drawn to the glass encased counter where all the Valentine's Day treats were displayed. There were pink satin boxes with big red bows and red velvet boxes with shiny gold bows. But the boxes behind the glass were large like the one Wyatt had left on my doorstep.

Jasper joined me at the Valentine's Day case. "Looks like they only sell big boxes of chocolates.
